With the rising temperatures, it is imperative that we keep our pets safe and cool. High humidity means it will take the lower temperature to get excessive heat exposure. So here are some tips and tricks to help you with just that.

1. Provide open access to fresh clean water at room temperature in a bowl. Arrange cool surfaces/shades, it will encourage the dog to lay down rather than roaming around.

2. Avoid walking your dog in heat, aim outings for early mornings and late evenings.

3. Older, obese, short-nosed, thick-coated, black colored and short-muzzled dogs are less tolerant of heat, hence they need minimum exercise in hot conditions and extra care.

4. Know the warning signs. Advanced signs of heatstroke can include anything from vomiting to disorientation to excessive drooling. Dogs with elevated body temperatures can seem lethargic or even lose consciousness altogether.

5. Avoid walking on sidewalks, pavements, or road surfaces even in the evening time since it may still be hot for dog paws.

6. Summer hair cut. Giving your dog a lightweight summer haircut helps prevent overheating. Shave down to a one-inch length, never to the skin, so your dog still has some protection from the sun.

7. Never leave your dog in a parked car, not even for a small duration.

8. Avoid keeping the dog in Air-conditioned rooms, room cooler is a much healthier and better option.
